Digital technology touches most every aspect of our daily lives. Now more than ever, there is a need for technologists to build technologies with a sense of humanity. But how can we imbue inert tools with this sense of humanity? This is the particular challenge for those who work in UX, some of whom may question the meaning of their work. Building human technology requires reflecting deeply on the philosophical reasons why people matter in the design process. In this session, Sam Ladner will discuss the path to discovering a sense of meaning in UX work, through ethnographic design research. She will discuss the philosophical and ethical reasons for good user experience. She will introduce the concept of “accompaniment,” and how it relates to human empathy. She will then discuss how ethnography is an essential tool in designing and building technology.
